"Oneiric moments"

By Doug Binder (Painter and Curator of The Dean Clough Galleries)Tom Palin was the Hunting Art Prizes "Young artist of the Year" at the Royal College of Art in 2000. His Carefully-worked oils pack a big emotional punch, redolent of snatches of memory. He focuses on haunting, often isolated images that could have been taken straight from a dream, and his goal is to make simple things become special—a solitary lamp-post, a van on a hill, a train glimpsed on a viaduct. "The finished work is essentially the fossil remains of lived time" says Palin who resists the recent trend for large, in-your-face canvases and has selected some 50 of his works for this subtle and rewarding show. |
